ExplorNapo is located on the Napo River, 160 Km (100 mi) from Iquitos City, ExplorNapo Lodge provides access to the pristine forest of Explorama's Sucusari Reserve, as well as access to the adjoining Amazon Canopy Walkway, one of the longest treetop walkways in the world.

This adventure offers the opportunity to live in an authentic Amazon River style with palm-thatched houses, kerosene lighting and open-hearth cooking in a rainforest surrounding. Shower and toilet facilities adjoin each house.

The Canopy Walkway is an experience unequaled in the Amazon rainforest. At a height of over 35 meters and extending for 500 meters. Walking in the jungle, bird watching, make contact with Yagua natives.

Enjoy a special trip in the forest, will know the Ethnobotanical Garden "ReNuPeRu" guided by the Napo River, hiking to the hanging bridge, observation of primitive birds. Include lodging, meals and tranfers.

Itinerary - ExplorNapo Lodge Basic (5 days / 4 nights)

Daily departures from Iquitos or Lima.

 

Day 1: ... (Lima) / Iquitos / Explorama Lodge (L-D)

  • Reception at the airport in Iquitos City

  • Brief orientation of the city dock.

  • Travel 80 Km. the Amazon River from Iquitos.

  • Reception at Explorama Lodge.

  • Lunch.

    Afternoon hike along the "Lake Trail" through lowland rainforest which at the time of growing is covered by water is seasonal and during this excursion is done by open boat.

  • Dinner.

  • In the night walk or open to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest and stars of the Southern sky.

  • Overnight at Explorama Lodge

 

Day 2: Explorama Lodge / ExplorNapo Lodge (B-L-D)

  • After breakfast, a boat ride down the Amazon and up the Napo River to the ExplorNapo Reserve and ExplorNapo Lodge.

  • Lunch

  • Afternoon visit to the ReNuPeRu ethnobotanical garden located next to ExplorNapo Lodge and tended by a local shaman. This garden is used to show visitors rainforest plants used in modern medicine as well as examples of native plant remedies which science may utilize in the future.

  • Dinner.

  • Evening excursion by open boat along the Sucusari Stream in search of caiman and to enjoy the night sounds and stars of the Southern sky.

  • Overnight at ExplorNapo Lodge

 

Day 3: ExplorNapo Lodge / Canopy Walkway / ExplorNapo Lodge (B-L-D)

  • After breakfast, hike to the Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge spanning 500 meters (one-third of a mile) connected by tree platforms and reaching a height of over 35 meters (115 feet) above the ground. Here you encounter a "bird's eye view" of part of the rainforest rarely seen by man but accessible without any type of climbing skill or equipment.

  • Lunch.

  • Afternoon boating excursion along one of the many Napo tributaries spotting along the way for birds and sloth. A stop is included for a try at river fishing with cane poles or a chance to swim.

  • Dinner and overnight at ExplorNapo Lodge

 

Day 4: ExplorNapo Lodge / Explorama Lodge (B-L-D)

  • Breakfast

  • Morning excursion to a black water oxbow lake formed when water from the Napo River became separated from the main flow of the river. These lakes are often covered with giant Victoria Regia water lilies and sometimes offer a glimpse of the elusive Hoatzin bird.

  • Lunch.

  • Afternoon boat trip back to Explorama Lodge passing the town of Francisco de Orellana, where a statue is erected to the intrepid explorer who became the first European to see the Amazon River in 1542.

  • Dinner and overnight at Explorama Lodge.

 

Day 5: Explorama Lodge / Iquitos / ... (Lima) (B)

  • Breakfast.

  • Morning walk along a local river trail with stops along the way to visit the "ribereños" or river people, visit a river school, see the local sugar cane rum "factory" or visit our resident American medical doctor in her clinic sponsored by the Rotary Club. Also, you can visit the CONAPAC AMAZON LIBRARY run by American, Megan Thomas.

  • Lunch. (if departure flight permits)

  • Return to Iquitos City.

  • Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima.

 

Recommendations:

Arrival in Iquitos has to be before 9:00 am and departure after 5:00 pm. Other schedules has to arrange extra boat with additional cost.

 

Bring:

  • Insect repellent

  • Good walking shoes that cover the heals. (to avoid twisting your ankle)

  • Large sun hat.

  • Sunglasses.

  • Sun cream.

  • Camera with plenty of film and batteries.

  • Flashlight / torch to use at nighttime. (plus spare batteries)

  • Lightweight raincoat with rainproof hat.

  • Umbrella in case of rain.

  • A good book to read, plenty of magazines. (to ready while you relax)

  • Pair of binoculars.

  • Water flask. (fresh drinking water for jungle treks)

  • Swimming costume. (for swimming in our large pool or in the river)

  • The native Indian tribes in the area are very poor and love to receive gifts of used clothing, old toys or anything at all that the tourist does not need and wishes to donate. Also, any items for children such as paper, pencils and pens are very gratefully received.

  • (For couples) Bring protection. (there are no drugstore nearby!!)
